But is society, is mankind, truly as despicable and low as they claim? I say not. If we were as divided and lowly as they suggest, we would have destroyed each other millennia ago. Yet, here we stand. This book reveals our potential for darkness, but it also highlights why we built civilizations, developed religion, philosophy, law, and order—to elevate ourselves. "Lord of the Flies" is fascinating because it shows the extremes of survival and how self-interest can turn us into monsters. However, we shouldn't cower in fear of the day this book's scenario comes true; instead, we should strive to be better, to rise above and beyond.
